The Bangladesh government is preparing a comprehensive policy to regulate the operation of battery-powered rickshaws and e-bikes across the country in an effort to reduce traffic congestion, improve road safety and ensure orderly urban transport.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam disclosed the plan while responding to a question in Parliament on Monday.

The minister said the government is examining various options for the effective management of battery-operated vehicles as part of its broader initiative to develop a modern multimodal transport system, particularly in Dhaka.

He noted that the regulation of these vehicles currently falls mainly under the jurisdiction of city corporations and traffic authorities. However, the government is working on a unified policy that will provide clear guidelines for the operation, management and control of battery-powered rickshaws and e-bikes nationwide.

The minister said the new policy would be announced soon and implemented in coordination with local administrations and relevant authorities.

During the parliamentary discussion, lawmakers highlighted the growing number of battery-powered vehicles in cities, noting that while they offer affordable and environmentally friendly transport, their unregulated operation has contributed to traffic congestion and road accidents.

The government expects the new guidelines to improve traffic discipline while promoting the safe and organized use of eco-friendly transport.
