DHAKA, October 25, 2026 — Chief Whip of the Jatiya Sangsad Md Nurul Islam Moni has called for climate justice for Bangladesh, stressing that the country needs fair international support rather than sympathy or charity to address the devastating impacts of climate change. Report BSS

“Despite contributing only 0.47 percent of global carbon emissions, Bangladesh is suffering some of the most severe impacts of climate change,” he said at a programme titled “Bangladesh at COP31: From National Priorities to Global Climate Action” at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in Dhaka.

Moni highlighted rising water salinity and shortages of safe drinking water in coastal areas, particularly in Barguna and Khulna, alongside growing threats to fisheries and agriculture. He also noted that recurring floods destroy homes, crops and livestock, leaving vulnerable communities to bear mounting losses.

He urged the international community to simplify access to climate finance, ensure transparent use of funds and deliver assistance directly to climate-affected people without unnecessary bureaucratic barriers.

The Chief Whip also called for stronger international recognition of Bangladesh’s rights in addressing climate-related loss and damage, urging government agencies, civil society and young people to present a united position at the upcoming UN climate conference, COP31.

The programme was organised by Ajker Projonmo Forum with support from the Young Climate Action Network. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Environment, Forest and Climate Change Dr Saimum Parvez, UNESCO Representative to Bangladesh Dr Susan Vize and UNDP Resident Representative Sonali Dayaratne attended the event.
