HONG KONG, October 25, 2026 (PR) — Bangladesh State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam has emphasised expanding green finance and environmentally friendly technologies to protect the environment and conserve ecosystems.

Speaking at an exchange meeting with expatriate Bangladeshis, business representatives and BNP leaders during his visit to Hong Kong on Sunday, he said the government was committed to pollution control, forest conservation and renewable energy development through green financing, clean technologies and nature-based solutions.

The minister said around 35.4 million trees had already been planted under government initiatives, with continued monitoring to ensure their protection and survival. He also stressed preventing hill cutting and forest encroachment and recovering illegally occupied forestland.

Addressing pollution in the Buriganga, Turag and Dhaleshwari rivers, he said 424 pollution points had been identified along the rivers. He called for stronger pollution control and wider use of concrete blocks as an alternative to traditional bricks.

Sheikh Faridul Islam also highlighted the potential of carbon credits and nature-based solutions in environmental protection. Discussions during the meeting covered expanding solar power, green finance, remittance growth, and improving the business capacity of Mongla Port.

During the visit, the minister inaugurated the “Sundarbans Lounge” at the Bangladesh Consulate in Hong Kong. He is scheduled to attend Eco Expo Asia 2026 and the Belt and Road Green Innovation Conference, as well as visit green technology forums and facilities in China’s Hunan Province.
