HELSINKI, July 1, 2026 (PR) - Technology group Wärtsilä has announced the successful commercial operation of a 150 MW/300 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at Bungama in South Australia, developed for Revera Energy.

The project is Wärtsilä’s fourth operational energy storage facility in Australia and is designed to enhance grid reliability by supporting the integration of high levels of renewable energy into the National Electricity Market (NEM).

Powered by Wärtsilä’s GridSolve™ Quantum High Energy battery technology and GEMS energy management platform, the facility can rapidly respond to fluctuations in solar and wind generation, while providing essential grid services such as frequency control, fast frequency response, and energy arbitrage.

The Bungama project completed all required commissioning tests ahead of schedule and entered commercial operation after meeting the Australian Energy Market Operator’s performance requirements.

Revera Energy CEO Daniel Kim described the project as a cornerstone of the company’s strategy to build flexible infrastructure for Australia’s clean energy transition, while Wärtsilä said the project demonstrates how advanced battery storage can strengthen grid stability and improve energy security in one of the world’s most renewable-intensive power systems.

With the Bungama facility now online, Wärtsilä’s energy storage portfolio in Australia exceeds 6 GWh.
