Japanese energy company JERA Co., Inc. and Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla) have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore cooperation in liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply and related infrastructure, as Bangladesh seeks to strengthen energy security amid rising demand.

The MoU, signed on October 28, provides a framework for discussions and research into potential areas of collaboration. JERA will draw on its international experience across the LNG value chain and power sector to explore opportunities with Petrobangla. Any further steps will depend on the outcome of the discussions.

The agreement comes as Bangladesh seeks reliable energy supplies to support economic growth while addressing persistent gas shortages and growing dependence on imported LNG.

Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who is visiting Japan on a four-day tour at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, visited JERA’s onshore LNG terminal and power plant in Futtsu, Chiba Prefecture, on Tuesday alongside senior government officials.

The visit highlights the potential for stronger energy cooperation between the two countries, particularly in LNG procurement and infrastructure development. However, the MoU does not constitute a binding supply agreement or confirm any investment commitments.

JERA is a major Japanese energy company with operations spanning fuel procurement, LNG, power generation and energy-related infrastructure. Cooperation with the company could provide Bangladesh with an opportunity to explore additional LNG supply options and technical expertise as it works to improve the reliability of its energy system.
