DHAKA, July 22 - Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has formed a high-level committee to review and address the key challenges facing Bangladesh’s textile industry, reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting one of the country’s largest export-oriented sectors. Report UNB
The decision was taken during a meeting with leaders of the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Bangladesh Secretariat on Wednesday, according to Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu.
During the meeting, BTMA leaders presented an overview of the current state of the textile industry, highlighting its export potential as well as the challenges affecting its growth and competitiveness.
They underscored the sector’s significant contribution to the national economy through industrialization, employment generation and export earnings, while seeking policy support from the government to ensure its sustainable development.
The industry representatives also called for measures to enhance the global competitiveness of Bangladesh’s textile sector amid evolving international market conditions.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman praised the textile industry’s vital role in the country’s economic development, describing it as a key driver of industrial growth, job creation and export performance.
He assured the BTMA leaders that the government would continue to extend its support to the sector and announced the formation of a high-level committee to examine the industry’s concerns and recommend appropriate solutions.
The meeting was attended by BTMA President Shawkat Aziz Russell, Vice-President Shamim Islam, former President A. Matin Chowdhury, former Director Syed Enayet Kabir, Engineer Rajib Haider, Directors Chowdhury Mohammad Hanif Soyeb and Badsha Mia, Amanat Shah Group Chairman Helal Mia and Munnu Fabrics Managing Director Samiul Islam.
