5th June 2026

DHAKA, June 5, 2026 – Bangladesh observed World Environment Day 2026 today with a series of programmes across the country, highlighting the importance of environmental protection, climate resilience and public awareness in addressing growing ecological challenges. Report BSS

Government agencies, educational institutions, environmental organizations and development partners marked the day through rallies, discussions, tree plantation campaigns and awareness-building activities.

Observed under the theme “Inspired by Nature, For Climate, For Our Future,” World Environment Day serves as the United Nations’ leading platform for promoting environmental awareness and encouraging collective action for a sustainable future.

Emphasizing the role of creative media in climate advocacy, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon called on filmmakers to use cinema as a powerful tool for raising awareness about climate change and environmental conservation.

Speaking at the closing session of the Global Trend and Climate Change Film Festival (GTCF) 2026 at the National Library auditorium in Agargaon, Dhaka, he said films carrying messages of social transformation receive priority under the government’s grant programme. He also assured support for productions focusing on environmental and climate-related issues.

Meanwhile, speaking at the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Shaikh Faridul Islam urged member countries to strengthen cooperation in building a sustainable and livable planet for future generations.

He stressed the importance of coordinated international efforts to identify and reduce sources of pollution, protect ecosystems and enhance climate resilience.

A range of environment-focused initiatives were also organized across the country. In Naogaon, DASCOH Foundation distributed 600 tree saplings among farmers and institutions in the drought-prone Barind region to promote afforestation and help reduce carbon emissions.

Tree plantation campaigns were launched in Gobindaganj of Gaibandha and Singra of Natore, while Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) organized discussions and plantation programmes involving environmental and biodiversity conservation groups.

In the capital, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Mohammad Shafiqul Islam Khan announced strict enforcement measures against noise pollution in the area surrounding Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, which has recently been declared a silent zone.

Addressing a noise-awareness rally at Gulshan-2 Circle, he warned that legal action would be taken against individuals and organizations violating existing noise-control regulations.

The nationwide observance reflected Bangladesh’s growing commitment to environmental protection, biodiversity conservation and climate resilience through public participation, policy initiatives and coordinated action at both national and international levels.
