Dhaka, 3 June 2026: The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has increased electricity tariffs at the bulk, retail and transmission levels, with the new rates taking effect from 1 June 2026.
Under the revised structure, bulk electricity prices have been raised by 19.85 percent, while retail tariffs for consumers have increased by an average of 16.68 percent. BERC has also approved a 23.96 percent increase in electricity transmission charges.
The new tariff order was formally announced at a press briefing held at 3:00 pm on Wednesday.
At the consumer level, electricity prices have been increased across all categories. Lifeline consumers will face the lowest increase of 15 percent, while some customer groups will see tariff hikes of up to 19.94 percent. The revised rates will be reflected in electricity bills for the month of June.
This marks the first electricity tariff adjustment since February 2024.
At the bulk level, the average tariff has been increased from Tk 7.04 per unit to Tk 8.39 per unit. Meanwhile, the average transmission charge has been raised from 31 paisa to nearly 39 paisa per unit.
The country’s sole transmission utility, Power Grid Bangladesh PLC (PGCB), had sought an increase in transmission charges from 30–31 paisa to 48–49 paisa per unit.
The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) had earlier proposed increasing wholesale tariffs by between Tk 1.20 and Tk 1.50 per unit, equivalent to a rise of 17 to 21 percent. BPDB argued that electricity generation costs are projected to reach Tk 143,108 crore in FY2026–27, with an estimated average generation cost of Tk 12.91 per unit. Despite the latest tariff increase, BPDB is still expected to face a substantial financial deficit.
The previous electricity tariff adjustment was made through an executive order on 29 February 2024, when retail electricity prices were increased by 8.5 percent and bulk tariffs were raised by 5 percent, from Tk 6.70 to Tk 7.04 per unit.
