Despite having huge stock of coal, the Khalashpir coal mine under Pirganj upazilla remained abandoned for years.

According to sources, coal deposit at Khalashpir was discovered more than three decades ago. The geological survey team located the reserve of coal around 500 million (50 crore) metric tonnes between 130 meters and 200 meters beneath the surface, spreading over an area of 12 to 25 Sq Km. Its quality was identified as bituminous quality of 11500 BTU grade.

Experts say the huge reserve of the mine may meet fuel requirements of the country for at least one hundred years.
