MYMENSINGH, October 30, 2026: Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmood has expressed hope that load-shedding in Mymensingh will ease before next summer, as the government launched a domestic rooftop solar program in Bhaluka to expand residential solar power generation.

The minister inaugurated the Domestic Rooftop Solar (DRS) program, jointly implemented by the Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) and Bangladesh Infrastructure Finance Fund Limited (BIFFL), at the Bhaluka Upazila Parishad auditorium on Friday.

Addressing the event, Iqbal Hasan Mahmood criticized the previous government for failing to develop adequate electricity and gas transmission infrastructure in the Mymensingh region, despite declaring nationwide 100 percent electrification. He said the present government had taken initiatives to address the infrastructure gaps and hoped the region’s power supply situation would improve before the next summer.

He said the rooftop solar program would encourage households to generate electricity from renewable sources, helping ease pressure on the national power system while supporting the country’s clean energy targets.

As part of the program’s launch, solar systems were installed at two residences: a 20-kilowatt-peak (kWp) system at the home of special guest and Fakhr Uddin Ahmed, MP, and a 5-kWp battery-integrated system at the residence of local resident Md Sohel Rana.

The event was chaired by Power Division Secretary Mirana Mahrook. IDCOL Acting Managing Director S. M. Monirul Islam delivered the welcome address, while its Head of Renewable Energy, Md Enamul Karim Pavel, presented an overview of the program.

BIFFL Chief Executive Officer S. M. Anichuzzaman and Md Ashfaqul Amin Mukut, joint secretary of the Economic Relations Division, also spoke at the event.

The DRS program aims to expand the use of solar power in residential buildings by facilitating rooftop installations. IDCOL and BIFFL are working together to promote household-level renewable energy generation and encourage more sustainable energy use.
