DHAKA, 24 August 2026 – In a significant advancement for Bangladesh's renewable energy sector, the German Development Cooperation (GIZ), through the Skills Development for Sustainable Energy Solutions (Skills4SE) project, has partnered with the Bangladesh Power Management Institute (BPMI) to launch cutting-edge training programs in solar and wind energy.
This initiative, commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), aims to equip engineering professionals in the power and energy sectors with essential skills for a sustainable future.
Over the past four months, 77 professionals—including 64 graduates from solar photovoltaics training and 13 from wind power training—have successfully completed their programmes, marking a substantial milestone in this collaborative effort.
To commemorate these achievements and the strengthened institutional capacity of BPMI, an event titled "Just Energy Transition (JET): Opportunities and Challenges in Developing a Skilled Workforce for the Power Sector" was held today in Dhaka. This event served as a vital forum for discussing the pressing need for specialized skills within the power sector as Bangladesh accelerates its renewable energy agenda.
The gathering brought together representatives from government, utilities, academia, the private sector, and development partners, fostering discussions on the emerging skill requirements in areas such as solar photovoltaics, wind power, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and hybrid renewable energy systems.
"A successful just energy transition requires not only appropriate policies, investments, and technologies, but also a skilled workforce capable of planning, operating, and sustaining modern energy infrastructure. German Development Cooperation’s collaboration with BPMI is a great example of how we are helping strengthen local institutions so they can lead and sustain capacity building for future generations,” said Ulrich Kleppmann, Counsellor and Head of Development Cooperation at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Dhaka, emphasizing the importance of skilled professionals in driving the energy transition while speaking as the Guest of Honour.
The event featured insights from key stakeholders, including representatives from the Power Division and the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA). The discussions culminated in essential recommendations for BPMI, aimed at further enhancing its curricula to align with industry needs and solidifying its position as a premier centre for renewable energy capacity development in Bangladesh.
As Bangladesh continues to forge ahead in its renewable energy initiatives, the joint efforts of the German Development Cooperation and BPMI represent a crucial step in nurturing the skilled workforce necessary for a sustainable energy future.
