Sylhet, August 15, 2026: Commerce, Industry, Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir has said Bangladesh needs sufficient time to overcome the ongoing energy crisis by developing the necessary infrastructure and expanding supply capacity.
“The challenges posed by the energy crisis are clear. We need to be given the time required to build the infrastructure and overcome the situation,” he said.
The minister said increasing the capacity of LNG terminals and drilling new gas wells would help strengthen the country’s energy self-sufficiency. “It will take around two years to make significant progress in this regard,” he added.
He made the remarks on Saturday while speaking as the chief guest at a district workshop in Sylhet on preparing the annual work plan for fiscal year 2026-27 and evaluating implementation of the previous year’s activities under a modern technology-based agricultural development project for the Sylhet region.
The minister said the country’s daily energy demand is currently almost twice the available supply, while demand typically rises during this period of the year compared with other seasons, making the shortage more visible.
He stressed that investment is essential to sustain economic growth and said the government is working to improve the energy situation. As part of its efforts to increase supply, the government is also trying to import LNG from Malaysia, he said.
