DHAKA, July 12: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today reviewed the progress of two major waste-to-energy projects for Dhaka and directed the authorities concerned to expedite their implementation through close inter-ministerial coordination. Report BSS
The directives came at a meeting held at the Cabinet Division conference room at the Bangladesh Secretariat, according to Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Shahadat Hossain Shadhin.
The meeting was informed that China’s CMEC Group will invest in a waste-to-energy plant at Aminbazar under the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC). The facility will process around 3,000 tonnes of municipal waste daily to generate 42.5 megawatts (MW) of electricity.
The project is expected to begin supplying electricity to the national grid by August 2028 and is designed to operate for at least 25 years.
The meeting also reviewed a second project at Matuail under the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), which will be implemented by South Korea’s B&F Company.
Under the project, approximately 15,000 tonnes of methane gas will be produced annually from municipal waste, enabling the generation of around 81,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity each year—equivalent to about 221 MWh per day.
In addition to electricity generation, the project will produce solar power, organic fertilizer, animal feed and environmentally friendly eco-bricks while processing between 3,000 and 3,500 tonnes of waste daily.
Officials told the meeting that the two projects would significantly improve Dhaka’s waste management system, contribute to climate change mitigation and support efforts to reduce global warming.
To accelerate implementation, the Prime Minister instructed the ministries of Local Government, Power and Environment to hold an inter-ministerial meeting to resolve outstanding issues and ensure smooth execution of the projects.
Emphasizing timely completion, Tarique Rahman also directed the authorities to ensure the maximum use of environmentally friendly technologies in both projects.
The meeting was attended by LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, State Minister Mir Shahe Alam, DNCC Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan, DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister ABM Abdus Sattar, Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman, and other senior government officials.
