DHAKA, June 6, 2026 – Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today emphasized the importance of planting tree species suited to local soil and environmental conditions to ensure higher survival rates and strengthen ecological balance. Reprort BSS
Speaking at a meeting on the government’s nationwide tree plantation programme at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon, the premier said soil characteristics vary across different regions of the country and tree plantation efforts should reflect those differences.
He noted that climate change is increasingly affecting seasonal patterns, citing changes in rainfall trends and declining forest cover as growing environmental concerns.
“Ttree plantation must be given the highest priority to protect the environment, mitigate the impacts of climate change and ensure a safer future for coming generations,” he said.
The meeting reviewed implementation plans for the government’s initiative to plant 250 million trees over the next five years as part of broader efforts to enhance environmental sustainability and climate resilience.
According to the Prime Minister’s Press Wing, the nationwide program is expected to be formally launched on June 14 at Dulahazara in Cox’s Bazar.
Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo, Prime Minister's Principal Secretary ABM Abdus Sattar, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Ministry Secretary Mohammed Rayhan Kaosar, Department of Environment (DoE) Director General (DG) Dr Md Lutfor Rahman, Additional DG Md Ziaul Haque, Chief Conservator of Forests Amir Hossain Chowdhury and Jamil Bashir JB, a member of the 25 crore Tree Plantation Programme Cell, attended it.
