2nd June 2026

Dhaka, 2 June 2026: The government has established a high-level Cabinet Sub-Committee on Energy to accelerate decision-making and policy coordination on critical energy security issues, including LNG imports, transportation of natural gas from Bhola, development of Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRUs), and the establishment of land-based LNG terminals.

The Cabinet Division issued a notification on Monday (1 June) announcing the formation of the committee, which is expected to play a key role in addressing Bangladesh’s growing energy demands and advancing strategic energy infrastructure projects.

According to the notification, the committee will be chaired by the Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources. Its primary mandate will be to review and recommend timely actions on major energy-sector initiatives and challenges affecting the country’s long-term energy security.

The committee’s membership includes the Minister of Finance and Planning, the State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, the Adviser to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Adviser to the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, the Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), the Secretary of the Finance Division, the Secretary of the Power Division, and the Secretary of the Energy and Mineral Resources Division.

The notification also authorizes the committee to seek opinions and technical input from relevant ministries, government agencies, industry experts, and private-sector stakeholders whenever necessary. In addition, the committee will have the authority to co-opt additional members to support its work on specific issues.

Meetings of the sub-committee will be held as required, while the Energy and Mineral Resources Division will provide secretarial and administrative support. The notification states that the committee becomes effective immediately.

Energy sector stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, noting that it could significantly improve inter-ministerial coordination and accelerate decision-making on major energy projects. They believe the committee will play an important role in ensuring reliable fuel supplies, expanding LNG infrastructure, and enhancing Bangladesh’s overall energy security at a time of rising demand and growing pressure on domestic gas resources.

The formation of the sub-committee reflects the government’s increasing focus on securing long-term energy supplies and strengthening the institutional framework needed to support the country’s economic growth and industrial development.
