1st June 2026

Dhaka, June 1, 2026 — The government has reinstated the 7pm closing time for shopping malls, markets and retail shops nationwide following the expiry of a temporary Eid-ul-Azha exemption.

The Power Division issued the directive on Monday, instructing all commercial establishments to comply with the earlier energy-saving measures that took effect from June 1.

Under the order, illuminated billboards must also be switched off by 7pm, while all fairs, trade exhibitions and cultural programs across the country have been directed to conclude by the same time.

The instruction has been sent to mayors and administrators of all city corporations, divisional commissioners and deputy commissioners for implementation.

According to the Power Division, the government had previously decided to limit operating hours for shops and markets to 7pm as part of efforts to conserve electricity. However, ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, a temporary exemption granted on May 12 allowed businesses to remain open until 10pm to facilitate festive shopping and commercial activities.

With the special arrangement now expired, authorities have been asked to ensure strict enforcement of the earlier restrictions.

The directive also reiterates that all billboard lighting must remain switched off after 7pm and that public events, fairs and cultural programs must adhere to the same deadline.

Officials said the measures are part of the government’s ongoing efforts to reduce electricity consumption and maintain a stable power supply amid rising demand driven by summer heatwaves, irrigation activities and increased overall energy use.

While the power situation has improved compared to previous years, authorities said conservation initiatives will continue to support the stability of the national grid.
