Dhaka, May 27, 2026 - Bangladesh’s electricity demand dropped significantly during the Eid holidays as offices, industries, and commercial activities remained closed and recent rainfall reduced temperatures across the country.

According to data from the Power Grid Bangladesh Plc, the country’s power demand fell to around 5,500 MW on Wednesday morning, while the national grid was able to supply electricity fully without load-shedding.

At 12:00 pm, the day’s peak demand reached 6,372MW, with an equal amount supplied to the grid. Earlier in the morning, demand remained between 5,521MW and 6,077MW, and full supply was maintained throughout the period.

Power sector officials said the recent storms and rainfall reduced cooling demand, while Eid holidays sharply cut industrial and commercial electricity consumption. As a result, pressure on the national grid eased considerably.

On Tuesday night, the evening peak demand stood at 10,775MW, with only 5MW of load-shedding recorded nationwide. In comparison, Bangladesh recorded a peak generation of 17,200MW on May 20, when around 350 MW of load-shedding occurred.

Bangladesh`s present power generation capacity over 28,000MW.

The lower demand also reduced reliance on expensive furnace oil fired power plants. During the daytime, electricity demand was largely met through gas, coal, and solar power generation.

Source informed EP that Solar power contributed 256MW to the national grid on Wednesday noon, while generation reached as high as 364MW on Tuesday due to stronger sunlight.

Electricity imports from India also declined sharply. Imports from Adani Power dropped from 1,442 MW earlier this week to 434MW on Wednesday morning, while imports through the Bheramara HVDC line decreased to 211MW.

Energy experts noted that Bangladesh may need long-term grid management strategies once the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant begins full operation with 2,400MW capacity, as lower off-peak demand could create operational challenges for the power system.
