JASHORE, Oct 21, 2026 — Bangladesh expects to generate 3,000–4,000 megawatts (MW) of solar power before next summer as public interest in installing solar systems continues to grow, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit has said.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after inaugurating a solar power system at the Jashore district BNP office on Wednesday. According to the state minister, this is the first solar panel installation at a political party office in the country.
The office has installed a 6-kilowatt solar power system in line with the prime minister’s policy initiative to promote solar energy. The project was financed entirely from its own funds, Amit said.
The system will supply electricity for the office’s own consumption, with arrangements to feed surplus power into the national grid. The installation cost is expected to be recovered within three to three-and-a-half years, he added.
Amit expressed hope that the initiative would encourage other political parties to install solar panels at their respective offices.
He said the government was providing policy support to promote solar power in response to growing public interest. The expansion of the sector was also creating opportunities for small entrepreneurs and generating new employment.
The state minister further said the government planned to gradually convert irrigation pumps to solar power. The move is expected to reduce dependence on diesel and grid electricity while lowering farmers’ production costs.
