DHAKA, Nov 3, 2026 — Petrobangla has dismissed reports of a complete shutdown of gas supply, saying deliveries will instead decline temporarily during scheduled maintenance at one of the country’s floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs).

In a statement on Tuesday, the state-owned energy corporation said gas supply would fall by around 320 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) over four days, potentially causing low pressure in some areas. It urged consumers not to be misled by rumours of a nationwide shutdown.

According to Petrobangla, daily supply is expected to decline from around 2,570 MMCFD to 2,250 MMCFD during the maintenance period. Supply is scheduled to return to normal after the FSRU resumes operations at 4pm on November 7.

A senior Petrobangla official told EP that the maintenance of the Summit Group-operated FSRU, initially scheduled for November 3, had been deferred by a day.

Bangladesh began importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) in 2018 to offset declining domestic production and meet rising demand. The two FSRUs at Maheshkhali have a combined regasification capacity of around 1,100 MMCFD and are operated by Summit Group and US-based Excelerate Energy.

Domestic gas production, which once stood at around 2,800 MMCFD, has fallen to 1,576 MMCFD, according to figures for October 30. LNG supplied through the terminals contributed another 982 MMCFD that day.

With one FSRU offline, the remaining terminal can supply a maximum of around 600 MMCFD, potentially bringing combined domestic and imported supply below 2,100 MMCFD.

Petrobangla estimates daily gas demand at around 5,500 MMCFD based on approved loads and 4,000 MMCFD based on actual consumption, against supply of approximately 2,600 MMCFD. The temporary reduction is expected to worsen shortages in areas already experiencing low pressure and intermittent supply.
