DHAKA, July 22, 2026 - Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed the relevant authorities to take immediate steps to remove the obstacles hindering the growth of Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) industry, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening the country’s largest export sector. The directive came during a meeting with a delegation of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) at the Prime Minister’s Cabinet Division office in the Bangladesh Secretariat on Wednesday, according to Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shipul.
The BGMEA delegation, led by its President Mahmud Hasan Khan, briefed the Prime Minister on the industry’s key challenges, particularly the need for an uninterrupted supply of electricity and natural gas. The business leaders also presented a set of short- and long-term recommendations aimed at improving the sector’s competitiveness and sustaining its growth.
Listening to the concerns raised by the industry representatives, the Prime Minister instructed the relevant ministries and government agencies to expedite measures to address the identified problems.
“The government has already begun working to resolve your problems. These are long-standing challenges that have accumulated over many years, so some will take time to address. However, we will immediately resolve those issues that can be addressed without delay,” Tarique Rahman told the delegation.
Seeking the BGMEA’s continued cooperation in advancing the country’s economic development, the Prime Minister said improving infrastructure and ensuring a supportive business environment would accelerate the growth of the garment industry and strengthen the national economy.
“If we can improve the infrastructure needed for the garment sector, the wheels of the economy will move faster and Bangladesh will progress toward greater prosperity. That is why our government is committed to ensuring the sustainable development of this industry,” he said.
The Prime Minister also highlighted that the government had presented a business-friendly national budget designed to encourage investment, industrial expansion and long-term economic growth.
Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shipul said the Prime Minister assured garment manufacturers that the government would provide all necessary support for the sector’s continued development.
“This government came to power to solve the problems of the people, including those faced by businesses. We will do everything necessary to help this industry grow,” he quoted the Prime Minister as saying.
At the conclusion of the meeting, BGMEA leaders presented a commemorative crest to the Prime Minister in recognition of his support for the country’s apparel industry.
Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, Prime Minister’s advisers Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir and Mahdi Amin, and BNP National Executive Committee Special Secretary Belayet Hossain Mridha were also present at the meeting.
