DHAKA, May 21, 2026 — State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Shaikh Faridul Islam has stressed the importance of coordinated efforts between government and non-government organizations to successfully implement the nationwide programme to plant 250 million trees over the next five years.
Speaking at a meeting with representatives of NGOs at the Forest Department conference room on Thursday, the state minister said the initiative would focus not only on plantation but also on ensuring the sustainable growth and proper maintenance of the trees.
The meeting was organised by the National Cell for the “250 Million Tree Plantation Programme in Five Years.”
“The government does not believe in symbolic tree plantation programmes. We want every tree to make an effective contribution to the environment and the country,” he said.
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Environment, Forest and Climate Change Dr Saimum Parvez said the programme is part of the BNP government’s election commitment and requires the collective participation of government agencies, private organisations, development partners, and the public.
Representatives from various NGOs highlighted their ongoing tree plantation activities, future plans, and offered recommendations to strengthen coordinated afforestation efforts across the country.
Chief Conservator of Forests Md Amir Hossain Chowdhury, Technical Expert Jamail Bashir Jebi, officials of the Forest Department, and representatives of different development organisations attended the meeting.
