Young climate activists have urged the government to include a clear and time-bound roadmap for generating 10,000 MW of solar power by 2030 in the upcoming Energy and Power Sector Master Plan (EPSMP), while also increasing the share of renewable energy in the national energy mix.

The demand was raised during a global climate strike held in front of the Jatiya Press Club on Friday, organized by  YouthNet Global and Youth for NDCs.

More than 200 young activists participated in the demonstration, carrying banners and placards highlighting the economic and environmental impacts of dependence on imported fossil fuels.

Sohanur Rahman said Bangladesh cannot achieve climate justice while remaining reliant on LNG, coal, and oil imports.

“The upcoming EPSMP must include a clear roadmap for at least 10,000 MW of solar power by 2030 and a significantly higher share of renewables,” he said.

The activists warned that continued fossil fuel dependence threatens economic stability, energy security, and climate resilience, especially amid global geopolitical tensions affecting fuel supply chains and energy prices.

Amanullah Porag called for an immediate transition toward affordable and locally generated renewable energy.

Supporting the movement, Shafiqul Alam said renewable energy is essential for Bangladesh as the country remains heavily dependent on imported fossil fuels.

Sharif Jamil emphasized that expanding solar and wind energy is now critical for both climate action and national energy security.

Organizers said similar climate strike events were held in 50 districts across Bangladesh with participation from students and youth groups.
