State-owned Bangladesh Gas Field Company Limited has started deep drilling operations at the Titas Gas Field to explore new gas reserves and help ease the country’s supply shortage.

Managing Director Abdul Jalil Pramanik said the well will be drilled to a depth of about 5,600 meters (18,372 feet), targeting deeper formations such as the Borail layer where significant gas reserves may exist. This effort aims to surpass the country’s previous drilling depth limit of around 4,900 meters.

The project is being carried out using a high-capacity rig with support from China National Petroleum Corporation Drilling Engineering Company Limited. Drilling began on April 19 and is expected to take about 210 days, with around 22% of work already completed.

BGFCL also plans to drill another deep well at Bakhrabad Gas Field using the same rig. The total cost of the two wells is estimated at Tk 594 crore, with a potential to yield up to 2 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of gas if successful.

Bangladesh currently faces a gas supply gap, with demand at around 4,000 MMCFD against supply of 2,600–2,700 MMCFD, making such exploration efforts critical to reducing supply gap.
