Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo on Tuesday (April 15) told Parliament that the government has taken comprehensive steps to tackling climate change impacts and strengthen national resilience.
Responding to a question during a Parliament session chaired by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, the minister outlined a series of policy and project initiatives now underway.
Mintoo said the government has introduced a Locally Led Adaptation Framework (LLAF) to ensure grassroots participation, alongside the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) and updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to guide climate action.
He added that work is ongoing to develop Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategies (LT-LEDS) to support a transition toward a low-carbon economy.
To enhance access to global climate funding, the government has established the Bangladesh Climate Development Partnership (BCDP), aimed at improving coordination and project development capacity.
The minister also highlighted a new framework under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, which will enable Bangladesh to participate in international carbon markets and attract foreign investment through carbon trading.
As part of immediate action, the government has launched a 180-day program that includes forest restoration, mangrove plantation in coastal areas, and planting of 15 million saplings across the country.
Mintoo said the Bangladesh Climate Change Trust Fund has been a key financing tool, with over Tk 4,151 crore allocated since 2009 to support nearly 1,000 climate-related projects nationwide.
The minister stressed that climate change is a long-term challenge requiring sustained efforts.
“Adaptation and mitigation cannot be achieved overnight. The government will continue to take planned and evolving measures to reduce climate risks,” he said.
