Infrastructure Development Company limited (IDCOL), with funding support from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) hosted a high-level roundtable on accelerating Energy Efficiency (EE) in Bangladesh's textile sector. Held in Dhaka, the event brought together senior government officials, global brand representatives, IDCOL leadership, and C-suite executives from over 15 leading textile units.

 

The roundtable opened with an address by IDCOL's Executive Director and CEO– Mr. Alamgir Morshed, who shared personal reflections on the energy landscape and outlined the session's goal: to mainstream energy efficiency in the textile sector. Mr. Morshed emphasized that this event compliments with IDCOL's larger vision-scaling EE investments and unlocking new project pipelines. Mr. Morshed concluded by thanking EY and GCF for their technical and financial partnership. This was followed by technical presentations.

 

The Chief Guest, Ms Farzana Momtaz, Secretary, Power Division, stressed that EE is no longer an environmental luxury-it is an economic necessity. She acknowledged the need for a system-wide shift and recognized the roles of IDCOL and SREDA in driving this change.

 

The panel discussion, led by IDCOL's Chief Investment Officer – Mr. Nazmul Haque, framed the global urgency of EE through cases from China, the US, and Kenya. He invited practical discussion on replicable models for Bangladesh. The panel included Mr. Kamal Ahammed from M&S, Mr. Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed from Saiham Group, and Mr. David Hasanat of Viyellatex Group.

 

strategic discussions developed into various key areas, including financing barriers, policy challenges, capacity building, material obstacles, and evolving consumer behaviour and culture. The consensus underscored the pivotal role of energy efficiency in bolstering global competitiveness and meeting climate obligations.

 

IDCOL has reiterated its dedication to promoting energy efficiency through robust partnerships, efficient financing mechanisms, and advocacy for supportive policies.
