Japan intends to further develop cooperation with Azerbaijan in the field of climate transparency, Akiko Maruo, a representative of the Global Environment Bureau of Japan's Ministry of the Environment, stated in an exclusive interview with Report.
"Firstly, we would like to congratulate the success of COP29 to the Presidency of Azerbaijan. Regarding the mitigation of climate change, it is important to follow up the Global Stocktake to enhance the ambition of parties. And we call on all parties to set economy-wide emission reduction targets including all greenhouse gases, sectors and categories, that are consistent with the 1.5 degrees goal, and based on the latest science. We also call on, among other things, major economies to set absolute emission reduction targets, " she said.
Akiko Maruo emphasized that Japan, together with Azerbaijan, organized the Baku Platform for Global Climate Transparency (BTP) event at COP29. "We will continue to cooperate with Azerbaijan to enhance the transparency."
She recalled that during COP29 in Baku, Japan's Minister of the Environment, Asao Keiichiro, held bilateral meetings with representatives of many countries to urge them to increase the ambition of their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
"We welcome the decision of Article 6 in this COP. We have Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) utilizing market mechanism to encourage mitigation projects in 29 partner countries including Azerbaijan. We would like to form further JCM projects from now on," she said.
