Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has expressed grave concerns over inadequate gas supplies to its six dozens of power units for electricity production.
Sources said the BPDB has received only 1,157mmcfd of natural gas against its requirement of 1867mmcfd.
A total of 15 gas-fired power plants having combined capacity of 3190MW could not generate the expected electricity due to a shortfall in the gas supply, an official said.
Electricity demand has increased to 9481MW in March this year from 8591MW in the same time last year.
Despite a growing demand for electricity, a gas supply to power stations has not increased accordingly.
The BPDB official also said the government has taken a decision in January this year to supply 1500mmcfd gas to feed power stations.
But, a total of 17 power plants or units have been shut mainly for a shortfall in the gas supply, he added.
The power units are Siddhirganj 335MW; Chattogram 210MW, Haripur power plant, Ashuganj 200MW, NWZPDCL unit-2, Bibiyana South 400MW etc.
The BPDB official further said the plants have a combined capacity to generate 2200MW of electricity.
