Bangladesh has prioritized expanding solar power and solar-powered irrigation to diversify energy supplies, reduce dependence on conventional fuels and strengthen environmental protection, State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Shaikh Faridul Islam said recently.

Speaking at a meeting with the European Union Delegation and representatives of European countries in Dhaka, he highlighted rooftop solar installations in residential buildings, factories and government establishments, alongside solar irrigation in suitable areas, as key components of the government’s clean energy agenda.

The meeting was organized under the EU’s outreach program on clean energy, climate priorities and preparations for COP31. Faridul stressed the need for quality technology, adequate financing, skilled workers and regular maintenance to expand solar energy sustainably.

He also highlighted initiatives to promote electric vehicles, shut down polluting brick kilns, restore canals and plant 250 million trees.

The government is working to strengthen climate resilience against floods, cyclones, heatwaves and salinity, while developing a carbon credit framework to attract investment in emissions reduction and carbon removal.

Faridul called for stronger cooperation among government agencies, the private sector and development partners.
