US-based Excelerate Energy has suspended liquefied natural gas (LNG) deliveries to Bangladesh since early March, citing force majeure following the escalation of the Middle East conflict and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

The suspension has further complicated Bangladesh’s efforts to manage a persistent natural gas shortage.

A senior Petrobangla official said the company last delivered LNG to Bangladesh in late February. Excelerate declared force majeure in the first week of March and has since extended the suspension, most recently until November.

Under a 15-year sales and purchase agreement signed with Petrobangla on November 8, 2023, Excelerate was scheduled to supply 850,000 tonnes of LNG annually in 2026 and 2027, increasing to one million tonnes per year from 2028 to 2040.

The agreement provides for 12 cargoes annually in the first two years and 16 cargoes per year thereafter.
