DHAKA, November 6, 2026 — Bangladesh is seeking Turkish expertise and investment in waste-to-energy generation and leather industry modernisation to strengthen environmental management, expand power generation and improve industrial competitiveness.
Commerce and Industry Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir visited several facilities in Istanbul on November 4–5 to explore opportunities for technical cooperation, technology transfer, training and investment partnerships, according to a ministry press release.
On November 4, he visited a waste incineration and power generation plant operated by ?STAÇ under the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. The facility can process 3,000 tonnes of municipal waste daily and has an installed generation capacity of 85 megawatts. The technology could help Bangladesh improve urban waste management, reduce landfill pressure and recover energy from waste.
The minister also visited the Istanbul Leather Organized Industrial Zone (?DOSB) and Cevahir Leather Industry and Trade Company to observe centralized wastewater treatment, leather processing, tanning and finishing technologies.
On November 5, he visited the Energram Thermal Disposal Facility in ?ile, which treats up to 33,000 tonnes of industrial waste annually and has 5.6 MW of installed power generation capacity.
The ministry said Türkiye’s experience could help Bangladesh develop suitable waste-to-energy projects, strengthen industrial waste treatment and modernise leather industrial estates. Cooperation in technology transfer, skills development and investment could also improve environmental compliance, increase export competitiveness and create jobs.
Adopting these technologies in Bangladesh would, however, require careful assessment of local waste characteristics, environmental standards and economic viability.
