The Asia-Pacific (APAC) region is expected to lead global transformer market growth through 2030, driven by large-scale investments in power transmission and distribution networks, renewable energy integration and rising electricity demand, according to GlobalData.

The global transformer market is set for steady expansion as utilities and grid operators upgrade aging infrastructure and strengthen networks to accommodate electrification, utility-scale solar and wind projects, data centers and industrial growth.

GlobalData’s latest report, Transformers Market Size, Share and Trends Analysis by Technology, Installed Capacity, Generation, Key Players and Forecast to 2030, identifies China and India as the main drivers of APAC’s growth.

China’s continued investment in ultra-high-voltage transmission lines and distribution networks is generating demand for power equipment. India is also expanding its electricity infrastructure through new substations and grid reinforcement projects to meet rising peak demand and integrate additional renewable power capacity.

“Utilities are shifting from standard equipment replacement toward higher-capacity, digitally monitored transformers that can handle fluctuating power flows from renewables and rising demand from data centers,” said Bhavana Sri Pullagura, senior power analyst at GlobalData.

She said long delivery lead times were encouraging buyers to secure local manufacturing capacity and establish multi-year procurement partnerships. Manufacturers offering high-efficiency equipment, built-in diagnostic systems and reliable delivery schedules would be well positioned to benefit from major grid upgrade programs.

The Americas and Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) will also remain important markets. In the Americas, the United States is driving demand through grid resilience programs, transmission upgrades, equipment replacement and expansion of domestic manufacturing. Canada, Brazil and Mexico are contributing through new substations, cross-border power links and distribution network improvements.

In Europe, replacement of aging equipment, cross-border interconnections and transmission upgrades in Germany and the UK are supporting demand. Meanwhile, infrastructure development and renewable energy projects in Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern markets are creating further opportunities.

The competitive landscape varies between power and distribution transformers. Major manufacturers in the power transformer segment include Hitachi Energy, Siemens Energy, GE Power, TBEA and Chint Group, while the distribution transformer market remains more fragmented, with numerous regional suppliers.

Manufacturers are increasingly focusing on advanced core materials, automated production and biodegradable insulating fluids to improve efficiency, extend equipment life, reduce fire risks and meet stricter environmental standards.

Pullagura said future market opportunities would extend beyond new installations, as utilities increasingly seek to extend the operating life of existing assets through refurbishment, equipment testing, condition assessments and improved maintenance planning. These services will become particularly important where replacement equipment remains difficult to source.
