DHAKA, Nov 4, 2026 — Bangladesh has drawn up a two-phase roadmap to drill and overhaul 150 gas wells by 2031, targeting an additional 1,752 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) of domestic gas production to reduce dependence on imported LNG. Report BSS
The program will be implemented in two phases: the first by January 2028 and the second from February 2028 to December 2031. Of the 150 wells, 104 will be newly drilled and 46 will undergo workover operations.
Petrobangla Chairman Abdul Mannan said the program aims to boost domestic output and strengthen gas supply to the national grid. A Planning Commission official said 51 wells have so far received approval, with work completed on 32, underway on 11 and awaiting commencement on eight. Another 26 wells under 10 projects are in the approval process, while the remaining 73 will be approved in phases.
The 32 completed wells have added a potential 270.8 MMCFD to supply, of which 139.6 MMCFD has initially entered the national grid. Since the present government assumed office on February 17, work on 11 wells has secured an additional potential of 58.8 MMCFD, with 41.9 MMCFD initially supplied to the grid.
The program comes amid a substantial supply shortfall. Bangladesh’s daily gas demand is 5,300 MMCFD based on approved loads and 3,800 MMCFD based on actual consumption, against average supply of around 2,700 MMCFD. Regasified imported LNG accounts for about 41 percent of supply.
The government expects the drilling, workover and exploration program, alongside seismic surveys, to strengthen domestic gas production and improve energy security.
