DHAKA, October 31, 2026 — Bangladesh plans to pass a law on rooftop solar power generation during the next session of Parliament, Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmood said on Saturday.
Speaking at a roundtable organized by New Age in the capital, the minister said the government was prioritizing solar power to strengthen energy security and ease pressure on the country’s electricity supply.
He acknowledged that the energy and power challenges arising from the global situation would not be resolved overnight, but said the government was working continuously to keep energy supplies affordable and stable.
The minister said the ongoing conflict in the Middle East had intensified global energy pressures, forcing the government to provide subsidies where necessary to reduce the burden on consumers. Ensuring uninterrupted electricity and gas supply remained a key responsibility of the elected government, he added.
To address supply shortages, the government has also taken initiatives to establish additional floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs), which would help increase LNG import and regasification capacity.
Mahmood said the government had placed special emphasis on solar power as part of its efforts to address energy challenges and maintain normalcy in people’s lives. The Domestic Rooftop Solar Program was recently launched in Bhaluka to encourage households to adopt solar systems.
Responding to a question about solar panel quality, the minister said the government was vigilant about ensuring the quality of solar products available in the domestic market and would strengthen monitoring to protect public interests.
He said government agencies, including local government bodies, the health department and district administrations, had already been instructed to use solar power systems. Around 8,600 service providers have been enlisted to support solar system installation at the local level.
The minister added that rooftop solar expansion would also create employment opportunities across the country.
He reaffirmed that the government remained committed to safeguarding national energy security and maintaining reliable supplies of electricity and gas despite the challenges posed by the global energy situation.
