ALGIERS, October 20, 2026 — Bangladesh and Algeria have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on hydrocarbon cooperation to strengthen Bangladesh’s energy security and diversify sources of energy imports.
Bangladesh’s Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Iqbal Hassan Mahmood and Algeria’s Minister of Hydrocarbons Mohamed Arkab signed the agreement on behalf of their respective countries.
The two sides discussed potential imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and other petroleum products from Algeria under a government-to-government (G2G) arrangement. They also explored cooperation in developing LNG and LPG infrastructure and exploring oil, gas and coal resources in Bangladesh.
Iqbal Hassan Mahmood requested Algeria to arrange training programs for Bangladeshi engineers and technicians to help them acquire technical expertise and learn industry best practices.
Welcoming the agreement, the Bangladeshi minister said the initiative had opened new opportunities to enhance energy security by importing LNG, LPG and other petroleum products from an alternative African source through G2G arrangements.
Separately, Algeria’s Minister of Mines and Mining Industries Mourad Hanafi and Minister of Energy and Renewable Energy Mourad Adjal met the Bangladeshi minister on October 20. Their discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, energy, fertilizer and knowledge sharing for mutual benefit.
Earlier, on October 19, Mohamed Arkab received Iqbal Hassan Mahmood at the VIP Presidential Lounge of Houari Boumediene International Airport in Algiers.
Bangladesh Ambassador to Algeria Najmul Huda was also involved in the engagement.
