DHAKA, October 16, 2026 — Bangladesh and Azerbaijan have discussed expanding cooperation in energy supply, air connectivity and skilled migration, as Dhaka seeks to diversify its energy sources and strengthen economic ties with the Central Asian region. Report BSS
The issues were discussed at a meeting between Bangladesh State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov in Baku, according to a press release from Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Energy cooperation is a key area of potential engagement between the two countries. Azerbaijan’s state-owned energy company SOCAR previously proposed supplying Bangladesh with 0.5 million to 1.5 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually under a potential five- to 15-year arrangement. SOCAR has also expressed interest in developing an LNG terminal in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh has been seeking to diversify LNG supplies amid declining domestic gas production and a persistent gap between gas demand and supply. Cooperation with Azerbaijan could offer another avenue for securing imported gas, subject to further negotiations and agreements.
During the Baku meeting, Bayramov described Bangladesh as an important partner and expressed optimism about giving bilateral relations fresh momentum. Both sides discussed opportunities to expand cooperation across different sectors.
Kobir thanked Azerbaijan for helping evacuate Bangladeshi nationals stranded in Iran amid the ongoing conflict. He also expressed appreciation for Azerbaijan’s support and hospitality during his participation in the summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA).
Bangladesh Ambassador to Türkiye M Amanul Haq, who is concurrently accredited to Azerbaijan, accompanied the state minister at the meeting.
