Dhaka, August 27, 2026: The government has launched an initiative to expand rooftop solar across Bangladesh by creating new local entrepreneurs and establishing a nationwide network of renewable energy service providers.
Under the initiative, qualified service providers will be enlisted on a district and geographic-area basis to offer technical support, investment and business packages, customer services, and operation and maintenance facilities for rooftop solar and other renewable energy technologies.
All relevant electricity distribution companies have simultaneously issued notices inviting applications for enlistment of service providers.
The new framework will create opportunities for local businesses, small and medium entrepreneurs, young people, women entrepreneurs and technology-based companies to enter the renewable energy market. Applicants will be able to participate either individually or through joint ventures, enabling emerging businesses to partner with experienced national companies and investors.
The initiative aims to take rooftop solar beyond major cities and large companies and expand it to every region of the country. Increased competition among service providers is also expected to encourage affordable and innovative investment and service packages for consumers.
The government is also working to promote rooftop solar investment through incentives, tax and duty benefits, easier low-cost financing and startup funding for innovative entrepreneurs, with particular emphasis on rural and remote areas.
Under the National Renewable Energy Development Strategy 2026-2030, Bangladesh aims to raise the share of renewable energy in electricity generation to 20% by 2030, including a target of 5,500MW of rooftop solar capacity.
The government expects the initiative to make rooftop solar a key component of the country’s energy transition while creating new opportunities for local investment, skills development, small and medium businesses and employment.
The program seeks to bring entrepreneurs from across the country—from Panchagarh to Patuakhali and Kurigram to Cox’s Bazar—into Bangladesh’s growing renewable energy market.
