DHAKA, Aug 6 - Bangladesh’s gas supply is expected to improve significantly after the Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) operated by Excelerate Energy at Moheshkhali resumed partial operations on Thursday following a two-week shutdown caused by a technical fault.
Petrobangla Member (Operation) Rafiqul Islam said the terminal began supplying around 115 million cubic feet of gas per day (MMCFD) after restarting operations. He added that gas supply is expected to increase to 750–800 MMCFD by Thursday night as the terminal gradually returns to full capacity.
The terminal had remained out of service since July 21, when a technical malfunction forced the suspension of LNG regasification operations. The outage severely disrupted the country’s gas supply, as Bangladesh has been relying on only one operational FSRU following the prolonged shutdown of its second LNG terminal.
The disruption significantly reduced the country’s LNG regasification capacity, intensifying gas shortages for power generation, industries and other major consumers.
Petrobangla officials said another LNG cargo has already arrived in Bangladeshi waters and is scheduled to begin unloading on Friday. Once unloading and regasification commence, the additional LNG is expected to further strengthen gas supply and help ease the ongoing energy shortage.
