Dhaka, June 20 (PR) - Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Abdul Awal Mintoo has called upon students to equip themselves with modern technology, scientific knowledge and strong human values to work for the welfare of humanity and contribute to building a safer and more sustainable future.

He also stressed that environmental conservation and disaster management are closely interconnected, describing sustainable environmental management as one of the most important components of disaster risk reduction.

The minister made the remarks while addressing a workshop titled “Building Future Leaders for a Safer and More Resilient World” as the chief guest at the BRAC University auditorium in Rampura, Dhaka, on Saturday. The workshop was organised by the Bachelor of Disaster Management (BDM) program under the university’s Department of Disaster Management and Environmental Studies.

Abdul Awal Mintoo said that despite being one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries, Bangladesh has established itself as an international example in disaster preparedness and resilience. He noted that disaster-related fatalities have declined significantly over the years due to effective initiatives such as the Cyclone Preparedness Programme, community volunteer networks, early warning systems and improved shelter management.

He said disaster management should not be viewed solely as a post-disaster response mechanism. Rather, it is a comprehensive process that encompasses preparedness, risk reduction and the development of resilient communities aimed at protecting lives and property.

The minister further observed that governments, international organisations and development partners around the world are increasingly seeking skilled professionals in disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation and humanitarian assistance. He said there is a growing global demand for qualified human resources capable of addressing the challenges posed by climate change and environmental degradation.

During the programme, Abdul Awal Mintoo briefed students and parents about BRAC University’s Bachelor of Disaster Management programme and highlighted the importance of developing skilled human resources to confront the impacts of climate change.

He expressed optimism that graduates of the programme would make significant contributions both at home and abroad in advancing national development, strengthening climate resilience, ensuring environmental sustainability and reducing disaster risks.

The workshop also featured a panel discussion involving Professor Dr Fuad H. Mallick, Dean of the Department of Disaster Management and Environmental Studies at BRAC University; Associate Professor Dr Emon Chowdhury; Dr Susan Vize, Country Director of UNESCO Bangladesh; and Kabita Bose, Country Director of Plan International Bangladesh. The closing remarks were delivered by Dr David Dowland, Registrar of BRAC University.

Students and parents associated with the Bachelor of Disaster Management programme attended the event, which highlighted the crucial role educational institutions can play in preparing future leaders to address the challenges of climate change, environmental sustainability and disaster resilience in Bangladesh and beyond.
