Dhaka, June 22, 2026: Bangladesh and Malaysia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, with a particular focus on expanding collaboration between Petrobangla and Malaysia’s national oil company, Petronas.

The discussions took place during a high-level meeting between the Prime Minister of Malaysia Anwar Ibrahim and the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Tarique Rahman, followed by a joint press conference highlighting key areas of mutual interest, including energy security, LNG supply, upstream investment, and technical cooperation.

The commitment came during Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s official visit to Malaysia today at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, according to a joint statement issued following bilateral talks between the two leaders.

According to officials, both sides placed strong emphasis on enhancing long-term energy partnership amid global market volatility and rising demand for cleaner and more reliable energy sources. The two leaders agreed that energy cooperation will play a central role in advancing economic growth and ensuring regional energy stability.

A key highlight of the talks was the expansion of institutional collaboration between Petrobangla and Petronas. Both companies are expected to work more closely on liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply arrangements, joint exploration opportunities, and knowledge-sharing in gas field development and offshore energy projects.

The leaders also discussed potential Malaysian investment in Bangladesh’s energy infrastructure, including gas transmission, storage facilities, and downstream energy services. Bangladesh expressed interest in attracting Malaysian expertise in renewable energy integration and energy transition technologies.

Officials noted that Petronas, with its long-standing global experience in LNG and offshore operations, could play a significant role in supporting Bangladesh’s ongoing efforts to address domestic gas shortages and diversify its energy mix. In return, Bangladesh highlighted its growing energy market and strategic location as a hub for regional energy trade.

During the press briefing, both Prime Ministers described the energy partnership as a “forward-looking strategic pillar” of bilateral relations. They stressed that the collaboration between Petrobangla and Petronas will not only strengthen commercial ties but also contribute to long-term energy security and sustainable development goals.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to accelerate technical-level negotiations and establish a structured framework for joint energy initiatives in the coming months.
