Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmood has said the government is working to accelerate renewable energy expansion by simplifying policies and providing stronger policy support for investors and entrepreneurs.
Speaking at the inauguration of the 15th International Bangladesh Infrastructure Innovation and Development Expo and Dialogue 2026 on Thursday, the minister acknowledged that Bangladesh still lags behind in solar power development but said the current government has placed priority on solar and wind energy since assuming office.
“Our main challenge is policy. I believe the sector will move forward rapidly if we can provide effective policy support,” he said.
The minister noted that the government has already begun simplifying renewable energy policies and finalizing a framework aimed at easing investment procedures. He expressed hope that the policy would be finalized within this month, with an official order expected by June.
The three-day international expo, being held from May 7 to 9 at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Center, features participation from around 140 companies and organizations representing 12 countries.
Addressing entrepreneurs, the minister urged investors to prepare for new opportunities in the renewable energy sector.
“We will provide policy support so that investors can easily bring in the necessary equipment and technologies,” he said.
However, he emphasized that battery storage systems are essential for the success of solar energy projects, particularly to ensure electricity availability during peak demand hours.
Iqbal Hasan Mahmood also encouraged private sector participation in rooftop solar projects in Dhaka, suggesting that entrepreneurs could partner with building owners to utilize unused rooftop spaces.
“This could significantly reduce electricity load in Dhaka while creating benefits for both investors and property owners,” he added.
According to organizers, the exhibition showcases products, technologies, and services related to power, energy, construction, and infrastructure development.
Managing Director of Exponet Exhibition Rashedul Haque said the event also includes six special sessions organized with support from the Dubai International Chamber, Export Promotion Bureau, and Business Promotion Council.
The sessions will focus on trade expansion, investment opportunities, technology transfer, industrial cooperation, international market connectivity, energy and infrastructure development, and policy issues.
Among others, speakers at the inaugural session included M Azizur Rahman, Mustafa Kamal, Muzaffar Ahmed, Md. Shafiul Alam Ujjal, and Mustafa Al Mahmud.
Industry stakeholders believe the event will help strengthen connections among local and international entrepreneurs, investors, technology providers, importers, and policymakers, supporting the growth of Bangladesh’s renewable energy and infrastructure sectors.
