Bangladesh has secured a notable diplomatic achievement at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, with a landmark resolution on sustainable bioeconomy adopted unanimously at its 82nd session in Bangkok. 

The resolution, titled “Supporting the Transition towards a Sustainable Bioeconomy in Asia and the Pacific,” was initiated and led by Bangladesh under the guidance of Faqir Mahbub Anam, Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology and Science and Technology.

 

Officials described the adoption as a significant step that reinforces Bangladesh’s growing role in shaping regional development priorities.

 

The resolution aligns with Bangladesh’s national development goals, emphasizing sustainable, innovation-driven, and inclusive economic growth. It highlights the importance of circular economy practices, efficient resource utilization, and the application of science and technology to drive transformation.

 

It also calls for stronger regional cooperation across Asia and the Pacific to facilitate knowledge exchange, capacity building, investment mobilization, and the development of sustainable bioeconomy value chains.

 

The initiative received broad support, with co-sponsorship from multiple countries including India, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Nepal, Bhutan, China, Mongolia, Armenia, and Kazakhstan—demonstrating a shared regional commitment to advancing sustainable development.

 

Speaking at the session, Minister Anam emphasized that the bioeconomy offers a practical pathway to address climate challenges, enhance resilience, and ensure inclusive growth across the region.

 

The session also adopted the Baku-Bangkok Declaration on “Strengthening Social Development to Build Inclusive Societies for All Ages,” reaffirming the region’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable social progress.

 

The successful adoption of the bioeconomy resolution marks a milestone in Bangladesh’s diplomatic engagement, highlighting its proactive role in promoting sustainable development initiatives at the regional level.
