The government has announced a reward of up to Tk 1 lakh for anyone providing verified information on illegal fuel hoarding and smuggling, in a move aimed at ensuring fair distribution and stabilizing the energy market.
The decision was taken by the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) amid rising global fuel prices linked to tensions in the Middle East, which have disrupted supply and market management of petroleum products.
According to the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, some unscrupulous traders have been stockpiling imported fuel instead of selling it at government-fixed prices and are secretly selling it at higher rates.
Field-level administrations have already taken action against several such illegal networks. However, authorities say the trend of unlawful hoarding continues to grow at an alarming rate.
Under the new initiative, informants providing credible information will be eligible for a reward of up to Tk 1 lakh, while their identities will be kept strictly confidential. Deputy Commissioners will be responsible for verifying information and ensuring the disbursement of rewards. The incentive is open to individuals, institutions, and organizations.
Approved by the Cabinet Division, the initiative will be implemented nationwide with support from local administrations.
Officials said the measure is intended to prevent artificial shortages, ensure uninterrupted fuel supply at government-set prices, and restore discipline in the distribution system during ongoing global energy uncertainties.
