Amid growing global energy uncertainty triggered by the Middle East crisis, the government has taken strict measures to protect Bangladesh’s fuel supply system. In response to rising prices and reports of unauthorized fuel stockpiling, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been deployed at key fuel depots across the country under directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The development was confirmed in an official statement issued on March 28 by BGB Headquarters spokesperson Md. Shariful Islam.
The deployment is being carried out under a coordinated operational plan supervised by BGB Headquarters. To ensure efficiency in distant locations, temporary base camps have been set up in secure areas, allowing personnel to respond quickly and maintain continuous oversight.
Since March 25, BGB members have been stationed at 19 fuel depots across nine districts, including Dhaka, Kurigram, Rangpur, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Cumilla, Brahmanbaria, and Sunamganj.
Operating under the leadership of designated officers, BGB teams are enforcing strict security and administrative control at depot sites. Their responsibilities include enhancing intelligence surveillance, preventing illegal fuel storage and sales, and responding swiftly to any potential sabotage threats.
Close coordination is being maintained with depot authorities to ensure rapid information exchange and effective management. Officials say the visible presence of BGB personnel is already helping stabilize supply operations and restore public confidence.
Alongside depot security, the government has reinforced border monitoring to prevent fuel smuggling. BGB has intensified land and river patrols, established checkpoints, and increased inspections in border.
Additional surveillance has also been introduced at land ports and inland container terminals, where vehicles involved in import-export activities—including trucks and lorries—are undergoing regular checks.
Authorities say these combined measures are aimed at maintaining a stable fuel supply, preventing market manipulation, and ensuring energy security during a period of heightened global volatility.
