17th April 2026

Chattogram, April 17, 2026 - State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit has said that Bangladesh currently holds sufficient fuel reserves to meet national demand through April and May, with proactive measures underway to secure supply for June. Report BSS

The minister made the statement during his visit to Eastern Refinery Limited in Chattogram.

He noted that the country is maintaining its highest-ever fuel stock, while the government is actively exploring alternative sources for importing both refined and crude fuel to ensure supply stability.

Due to a temporary shutdown of refining operations at Eastern Refinery, Bangladesh has increased its reliance on imported refined fuel. Amit added that the refinery’s second unit is expected to become operational in 2029, which will significantly enhance domestic refining capacity.

Highlighting recent import trends, the minister said that most fuel shipments arrived during January and February, with some disruptions occurring in March and April. Despite these challenges, current reserves remain adequate to meet demand for both the ongoing and upcoming months.

Efforts are ongoing to secure sufficient fuel supply for June, particularly in anticipation of rising demand. The government is also taking steps to increase refined fuel oil imports and diversify crude oil sourcing, including exploring imports from Malaysia for processing at the refinery.

Amit emphasized that energy management is currently being prioritized for the agricultural and industrial sectors. While limited load shedding may occur, these sectors are receiving preferential treatment over households during this period.

However, he assured that household consumers will regain priority once the harvest season begins in May.

Among others present during the visit were Energy Secretary Saiful Islam, Petrobangla Chairman Ehsanul Haque, Joint Secretary Amir Hossain Chowdhury, and Eastern Refinery Managing Director Sharif Hasnat.
