The government has taken an initiative to transform Bangladesh’s shipbuilding and ship-recycling industries into safer, environmentally sustainable and globally competitive sectors.
Separate meetings were held at the Secretariat on Thursday to review existing laws, regulations and policies governing the two industries, assess their challenges and formulate recommendations for their sustainable development, according to a handout issued by the Press Information Department recently.
Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo chaired the meetings at his ministry’s conference room. Industries Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir and State Minister for Shipping Razib Ahsan attended as special guests.
The meetings focused on several key areas, including environmental protection, workers’ safety, compliance with international standards, technological modernisation, skilled manpower development and expansion of financing facilities.
