Technology group Wärtsilä and Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions Co., Ltd. (TGES) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly evaluate power supply solutions for data centers in Japan amid rapidly growing demand driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing.
The MoU, signed in Helsinki in August, will provide a framework for evaluating gas- and dual-fuel engine-based power generation solutions for selected data center projects under development by TGES in Japan.
Japan’s expanding data center market is facing grid connection constraints and lengthy power procurement timelines, prompting developers to explore on-site and off-grid power solutions that can provide reliable electricity more quickly.
Under the agreement, Wärtsilä and TGES will develop initial technical concepts, establish performance parameters and assess the feasibility of selected projects. TGES will contribute its local market and project-development expertise, while Wärtsilä will provide its experience in data center power plant solutions.

He said the partnership would enable the companies to evaluate flexible, scalable and rapidly deployable power solutions to support Japan’s growing digital infrastructure.
Wärtsilä said its engines can provide continuous primary power for data centers, while consuming less water and fuel than conventional alternatives such as gas turbines. Their rapid ramp-up capability and modular design also allow reliable power supply and capacity expansion as demand increases.
