Dhaka, 9 October 2026: Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom has pledged to ensure the earliest possible experimental connection of electricity from the first unit of Bangladesh’s Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant to the national grid.

The commitment was made by Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev during a meeting with Bangladesh’s Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam in Moscow, according to an official press release.

The meeting reviewed the project’s progress and the timeline for starting electricity generation. Likhachev said efforts were underway to facilitate an early experimental grid connection of the first unit, equipped with a VVER-1200 reactor.

He described Rooppur as strategically important for Bangladesh’s energy security, with the potential to provide affordable, low-carbon electricity.

Minister Anam said the plant’s two units, with a combined capacity of 2,400 megawatts, were expected to meet around 11 percent of Bangladesh’s electricity demand.

Likhachev also said commissioning and initial start-up activities for the second unit were expected to begin in 2027. The two sides discussed expanding future cooperation in nuclear energy, building on the Rooppur project.
