Bangladesh has outlined its plans to strengthen energy security, diversify LNG supplies and expand import infrastructure at the 15th LNG Producer-Consumer Conference 2026 in Tokyo.
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit, who addressed the conference at The Westin Tokyo on September 11, said energy security must go beyond ensuring fuel availability amid geopolitical shifts, supply disruptions and market volatility. Reliability, diversification, affordability and flexibility should be central to the country’s energy strategy, he said.
Amit said natural gas remains vital for power generation, fertilizer production, industries and commercial activities, but declining domestic production has increased Bangladesh’s reliance on imported LNG. The country currently receives around 1,100 MMCFD of degasified LNG through two floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs), while annual LNG demand is around 7 million tonnes.
He said Bangladesh plans to add another 600 MMCFD FSRU at Maheshkhali by 2028 and a 1,000 MMCFD land-based LNG terminal at Matarbari by 2030. LNG import capacity could increase by 3–4 million tonnes per annum during 2026–30 and potentially reach 17–18 MTPA during 2031–40.
The state minister said Bangladesh is diversifying LNG procurement through government-to-government deals, international tenders and direct purchases while pursuing a transparent and investment-friendly policy to attract international investors.
He stressed that Bangladesh remains committed to working with international partners and friendly countries to build a secure, reliable and affordable energy future.
