LONDON, Aug 6 - The World Energy Council (WEC) has welcomed Nigeria as its newest Member Committee, marking a significant step in expanding Africa’s representation in global energy leadership and advancing clean, secure and inclusive energy transitions.
The Council said Nigeria’s membership reflects the country’s growing role in shaping Africa’s energy future through its diverse energy resources, policy reforms and energy transition initiatives. The new committee will represent Nigeria within the Council’s global network of nearly 100 national member committees.
World Energy Council Secretary General and CEO Angela Wilkinson said Nigeria’s participation would strengthen Africa’s voice in global energy discussions, including at the World Energy Congress to be held in Riyadh in April 2027.
The Nigerian Member Committee will be chaired by Abdulrazaq Isa, Co-founder and Chairman of Waltersmith Petroman Oil Ltd., while Bala Wunti, former Chief Health, Safety and Environment Officer of NNPC Ltd., will serve as Chief Executive Officer. The board also includes senior representatives from industry, academia and international energy institutions.
Welcoming the development, Isa said the committee would work to strengthen Nigeria’s contribution to the global energy dialogue, while Wunti pledged to promote pragmatic energy policies, mobilize private investment and support a secure, affordable and sustainable energy future for the country.
Founded in 1923, the World Energy Council is a UN-accredited, non-profit global energy organization with more than 3,000 member organizations spanning governments, industry, academia and civil society worldwide.
