Dhaka, July 28, 2026: Bangladesh has sought Malaysia’s assistance to help mitigate the country’s ongoing natural gas crisis triggered by the breakdown of a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) off the coast of Moheshkhali, as the government explores immediate and longer-term solutions to restore gas supplies. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday held a telephone conversation with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, requesting cooperation to bridge Bangladesh’s widening gap between natural gas demand and supply.
According to State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit, the Prime Minister also sent a formal letter to his Malaysian counterpart outlining the country’s current gas supply challenges. The letter was delivered in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday by the Prime Minister’s Education Adviser, Mahdi Amin.
Briefing reporters, Aninda said Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim assured Bangladesh that he would consult the relevant ministries and government agencies before responding on how Malaysia could assist.
“He said they would examine whether an immediate solution is available and inform us as soon as possible. If urgent support can be provided, it will be welcomed. Otherwise, Malaysia will let us know what form of cooperation it can extend,” the state minister said.
He noted that Bangladesh has already been exploring the possibility of importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Malaysia. Discussions also covered potential technical cooperation, advisory support and other forms of assistance to help address the current energy shortage.
Aninda described the discussions between the two countries as positive, adding that the nature and timeline of any support would depend on Malaysia’s assessment and subsequent response.
The government’s move comes as Bangladesh faces significant disruptions to natural gas supplies following the technical failure of one of its offshore LNG import terminals, affecting gas availability for industries, power generation and other consumers.
